Taste Knutsford Campaign PDF Print E-mail

Hopefully many of you will have seen the window display, 'love Knutsford,'at the shop on Canute square, which arrived last week. The next bit of the jigsaw has been production of the ‘taste Knutsford ‘ promotion which started from yesterday, funded by Cheshire East Council as part of its Recession mitigation plan through the visitor economy ‘event towns’ project. This is being distributed initially via the featured businesses, the TIC and at the Tatton food lover’s fair. Every car arriving at Tatton for this event is being given a copy and it is also available via the info cabin and the Housekeeper’s Store. This makes the distribution very targeted on a discerning ‘foodie’ audience.

Knutsford – Shaping up for Christmas PDF Print E-mail

Having spent time away this summer, I returned to take a fresh look at Knutsford. Our town, perhaps more than most, is in a constant state of flux. You go away for a week and come back to find an old favourite has shut up shop. Two doors down someone new is setting up. This rapid turnover is perhaps because the survival of many of our retailers depends on visitors – and they’re an unpredictable lot.
However this can’t be said of Panache, the hairdressers on bottom street, who disappeared after 32 years leaving such a sad little farewell note in the window I almost shed a tear.  At the other end of the scale Mallard Tea Shop didn’t last a year. Nice tea, wrong location? Having Costa Coffee next door can’t have helped.

Thankfully Knutsford caters well for our daily needs with the likes of Woods and The Easy Fish Co.  Then there are those that tempt you to browse – the new Hidden Jem is a treat and The Summer House, Chalk, House and Cherry Tree Gallery need constant checks for the loveliest gifts.

Indeed the majority of our shopkeepers seem to have weathered the recession and are in positive mood. Mode-Elle on Minshull Street was on the brink of closing, sending a shudder of fear through women within a 30 mile radius. But I was glad to hear they have re-signed their lease and we can all breathe a well-measured sigh of relief.

Question put to George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor and MP for Tatton, could provide a solution to help stimulate the property market PDF Print E-mail

My Question to George Osborne ...

I wonder what you think about the possibility of reversing the way that Stamp Duty is paid by homebuyers. My proposal would be that you pay stamp duty on the home you are selling rather than the home you are buying, which would mean first time buyers would pay nothing and families wishing to move up the property ladder would pay a smaller amount than under the current system. This would mean that anyone downsizing would be paying stamp duty on the value of the home they were selling, which would take slightly out of their profit. Government revenue would not alter as stamp duty would still be paid every property sold, and making moving cost cheaper would help to keep the property market more fluid I would be interested to hear your opinion. Mrs C Hutton 6th October 2009.

Knutsford Business Club's intervention leads to a brighter future for Knutsford Businesses on King Street PDF Print E-mail

Following a request for help to the Knutsford Business Club regarding the power cuts experienced by businesses in the centre of Knutsford, and subsequent help from George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor and MP for Tatton progress can now be reported.

Following a meeting between Scottish Power and a Commercial Director of one of the restaurants affected, he reported "that he is pleased to say that things appear to have settled down for their business although I understand there have been some outages in recent weeks. There does at least appear to be a long term plan in place and there is now an effective line of communications. It is a pity that we had to shout and scream to get it but on hopes that this progress will continue."
